Our History
The Catholic Women’s League was founded in Victoria in 1916, under the patronage of His Grace Archbishop Carr of Melbourne who appointed Fr W J Lockington, SJ, as Spiritual Director.
Branches opened in the Archdiocese of Melbourne in 1916, Ballarat Diocese – 1917, Sandhurst Diocese – 1925 and Sale Diocese – 1926. At the invitation of Most Rev F Henschke, Bishop of Wagga Wagga Diocese, branches opened in that Diocese in 1947.
Our first president was Dr Mary Glowrey, after whom our headquarters, Mary Glowrey House, is named.
