The Horizon

Throughout 2007 there have been many reasons for celebrations for members of Catholic Women’s League of Victoria & Wagga Wagga Inc. And there are more to come!

We will try to keep you abreast of these occasions, before and after they happen, though our magazine, ‘The Horizon’.

I mentions some of these occasions:- World Day of Prayer, with its ecumenical nature; The gatherings to celebrate WUCWO Day around the 13th May; The visit of Professor Donna Orsuto; Our remembrance of the 50th anniversary of the death of the 1st President of the League, Dr. Mary Glowrey; The 150 years of service to Victoria by the Sisters of Mercy and the bi-centenary of the foundation in Ireland of the Brigidine Sisters.

During June we also have the ‘Feast of Feasts’ and a story to assure older people that they are always capable of doing ‘something’ no matter what age.

The Regional and Diocesan Annual General Conferences have nearly all been completed with the General Conference to come in August, followed by the National Biennial Conference in September.

The Horizon

Posted by The Editor Sat, 21 Apr 2007 09:51:00 GMT

The May 2007 Edition of The Horizon contains the dates of many of the important League events during the next few months. There are Regional, Diocesan and General Conferences as well as spiritual gatherings of different kinds. Our work in Catholic Women’s League never seems to end.

Following on from the 90th Anniversary celebrations of the CWL in the Melbourne Archdiocese last year, the members of CWL in the Ballarat Diocese will celebrate 90 years of faithful service on the 14th November 2007.

During May we celebrate WUCWO Day, Mother’s Day, the feast of Our Lady Help of Christians, our Patroness, and the great feast of Pentecost, sometimes called the birthday of the Church.

We, The Horizon Committee, are endeavoring to introduce a “Your Say” column each month. We encourage members to reply in a few words to some of the articles we publish. Feel free to support or reject articles. Alternately, if there are other matters you would like to mention, please write to us.

Celebrating 90 years of publication

Posted by The Editor Sun, 17 Sep 2006 03:51:24 GMT

The month of October 2006, marks the 90th anniversary of continuous publication of the Catholic Women’s League of Victoria & Wagga Wagga Magazine, ‘The Horizon’. It is reputed to be the oldest Catholic women’s magazine in Australia.

Originally known as ‘Women’s Work’, and published in many different forms, it has been enhanced thanks to the aid of modern IT, and now is a stylish production.

To celebrate this auspicious milestone, a special Anniversary edition will be printed and distributed during December. It will be free to all who currently subscribe, but will be available to non-subscribers and friends of the League at a cost of $2.50 posted. We hope to bring you items from early beginnings right up until the present time.

Address by Brenda Finlayson to Governing Body

Posted by The Editor Sat, 01 Apr 2006 05:29:00 GMT

In November 2005 Brenda Finlayson, WUCWO Board Member Australia, travelled to Jerusalem to participate in the conference of the International Catholic Organisations . The April edition of the Horizon features a summary of her trip.

Brenda spoke of the privilege of accompanying hte President-General and working for WUCWO in the walled Holy City. She had three hours only for ‘sight seeing’, but it was enough to walk around the walls and to visit the Mount of Olives and the chapel ‘Dominus Flevit’ (The Lord Wept). Brenda stated that to understand the significence of this site one needs to read the Gospel according to Luke 19:41-44.

The Horizon - February 2006

Posted by The Editor Fri, 27 Jan 2006 10:41:00 GMT

The New Year is not only ‘New’ in time, but it also brings other things ‘new’ into our lives.

In the first edition of our magazine, ‘The Horizon’ for 2006, we introduce some ‘new’ faces and names, and their words of wisdom will be featured this month.

First of all, we have a new General President, Madge Fahy, who is well known to you all, wearing a different hat. We welcome Madge, and look forward to working with her in her new capacity.

Secondly, we introduce to you our ‘newish’ General Chaplain, Dean Geoff Baron. Welcome Father, and it is to be hoped the task of keeping the ladies of the Catholic Women’s League in order, does not prove to be too onerous.

The third ‘new’ face is Margaret Brodie, who kindly volunteered her expertise to take up the vacant position as Secretary of ‘The Horizon’ Committee. Thank you Margaret for your generosity. We look forward to working with you.

During the year we celebrate the Centenary of Catholic Women’s League in England, and also the 90th anniversary of Catholic Women’s League in Australia. Each month we endeavour to keep members up to date with happenings at Branch, National, and International levels, as well as report on the Activities ie., Social Questions, Santa Casa, Cristus Rex, and Mary Glowrey House Committees. You will also find general catholic and liturgical news.

Make sure your subscription is up to date.
